simmo's prize

You only have to take one look at today’s main picture of Greg Simpson to know it was a perfect morning to go surfing. A pumping autumn morning to round out the last day of March, with golden sunshine, light winds and a groomed east swell that poured straight into all of the Coffs beaches. Now we just..... Dean Morrison has a brand new profile film out called “A Dingo’s Tale” and guess what?? He’s coming to Sawtell to show it to us Coffs coasters!!
It’s been put on by surf film distributor VAS entertainmentSawtell cinema and I think Sawtell legend Barney Miller has something to do with it all. Watching a surf film at a packed cinema is an awesome experience, especially when it features one of the best tube riders in surfing history. It not everyday we get a chance to see a new surf flick on the big screen, so I’d be grabbing this opportunity with both mitts.... CLICK HERE to see the trailer and get more info

the maldives lure

DUST swirls around the old bus as she shudders and stops to pick up a passenger.
The year is 1972, or thereabouts. The gun with the wheel is young; late teens, could be early 20s. He’s thin, fit, healthy. Glint of adventure in the eye. The bloke who hops on is 24 maybe, ugly, with a beard.
The driver, Tony “Hussein” Hinde usually doesn’t stop for a straggler. But this bloke looks like a surfer. No ticket? No problem. Come along for the ride, mate!
The bus is going to the mines. Surfers and shapers from around Australia who have

beach day

Weather conditions don’t get much better than what’s on offer this morning. A golden sky was warmly backlighting the morning crew today, while a light west wind was brushing clean a 2-foot east swell, not the kind of day you...CLICK HERE to see all the pics

drainpipes

Found a crazy shallow bank to shoot some water photos for this morning’s post. The swell has lost its wobble and the perfection has started… it’s a little smaller than yesterday but when you are getting tubes like this that doesn’t seem to matter. On more than one occasion I buried my water-housing into the shallow sandbar trying to get under these drainpipes. Johnny Craig was again the....click here to read and see the full post

autumn combo

Light winds, warm water, swell, sunshine…. autumn is upon us and it is sublime, surfers of the mid north coast are loving it. Only bummer is the daylight savings hours for the early morning surfer. The sun doesn’t come over the horizon till nearly 7 O’clock, which doesn’t leave a lot of time for the crew trying to sneak in a decent surf before work/school….. hanging for daylight savings to end.....click here to see all the pics

home

Back in Coffs this morning and have been greeted with a handy looking east swell. An overhead wave is something I didn’t really see on my travels on the sunshine coast in Queensland. I’ve heard that the mid north coast has had some tasty waves while I’ve being away....click here to read and see full post

tailor made

Another stunning evening draws to a colourful end over Noosa Heads. The setup couldn’t be made better if you drew it yourself. Pointbreak after pointbreak stretching out for kilometers along a tree lined headland which protects the bays from howling southerly and easterly winds. .....click here to see some more shots from yesterday's Noosa sessions

time machine

Ahhh..another beautiful day in Noosa Heads….. what I would give to be living here 50 years ago. In near darkness this morning I was trotting down the track past in the inner points on the way out to Tea tree bay, through the national park surrounded by paper barks with fresh organic smells it felt like I was in the sixties, that was until the lineup came into site and there were at least 40 surfers sitting off the take off zone. Amazingly you still get a good amount of waves despite the crowds, but every time I come to Noosa I always think how good it would be to have myself a little time machine, so I could surf these waves without the crew. Nooooosaa!

No the pics today aren’t of Diggers beach… The ST surf images van has packed up and headed north to the beautiful Noosa Heads and will be coming in each day for the next week from these magical Queensland pointbreaks.... CLICK HERE to see pics from our first day in Noosa

last night

The first hour of light each morning is when I spend most of my time behind the lens, but I thought I’d switch it up for today’s post and shoot some crew that get their surfing done at the other end of the day. The after work/school surfer spends the front half of their days going through motions while hoping for an arvo glass off session at their favourite beachie… well last night a few of their daydreams came true… it wasn’t all time but it was a ton of fun, great way to cap off a day at work...CLICK HERE to see all the pics

sweet autumn

Starting to see all the signs of a beautiful Autumn pattern developing over the last week. surprise sess

Managed to snag a few shots late last night despite how miserable it looked early yesterday. It was a bit of a surprise session really, I wasn’t expecting anything more than ankle biters, as most beaches weren’t even breaking, but this little beachie was turning on some fun knee to waist high peelers for the after work/school brigade. Didn’t fin......CLICK HERE to see all the pics
